Oignies '26 - C’était formidable !

VIsit to Oignies 2026 by Helen Blooomfield AKA Madame la Présidente.

The coach was loaded on Thursday evening. We all arrived at Burlington Road on Friday morning and set off for Dover. It was with some trepidation. I was not sure whether we would have to wait for ages at Dover or would be late…

All Aboard!

I had been in touch with Alan Bullock many times in the past few weeks. Our driver Kim was sent to Newport Pagnell Services in case of delays. We had done all that was possible. Credit should go to Bullocks coaches for looking after us so well.

We arrived in Oignies to be greeted by our wonderful friends. Much later, having renewed friendships, eaten and drunk lots, our beds beckoned.

Saturday morning’s committee meeting was followed by the commemoration. What a great sight we must be. Bands, flags, banners, and the townsfolk. To the cemetery and mausoleum. Very moving from a town still grateful for the help from the Sherwood Foresters during World War II.

Les Frères Sardines along with some pirates

Our party in the evening was as brilliant as usual. Many sailors, several pirates, two sardine cans, Mr Smee, and of course Captain Haddock. The food was delicious, the wine flowed and camaraderie was extended

Le Spectacle on Monday

After Sunday, spent with our families, Monday’s trip was a whole new experience for some of us. A quick look at the coast, delicious pastries and then aperitifs and then we were treated to a spectacular show and wonderful food at the Estaminet Palace.

Tuesday’s journey back to England was quite long but, I think I speak for everyone when I say “Thank you very much” to our very dear French friends. We had a blast.

... and back to Blighty on Tuesday
